◆Concept — What is a user account?

A user account is a record in /etc/passwd (plus /etc/shadow for the password) that gives a human or service a name, a numeric UID, a primary group (GID), a home directory, and a login shell. Every process runs as some UID, and every file on disk is owned by some UID + GID — so users are the fundamental unit of access control on a RHEL system.

✨Mental Model

Think of /etc/passwd as the front-desk guest book (everyone can read it — that's fine, it only has non-secret data) and /etc/shadow as the vault in the back office (root only). useradd makes a new guest book entry and unlocks a room (home directory); usermod edits the entry; userdel rips the page out (and optionally torches the room with -r).
